See What Labor Is Costing You

What This Is

KeyBolt turns your clocked hours and your commissions into one number: roughly what your crew cost you this month, and what share of your revenue that is. Find it at Accounting, then Payroll & labor.

Two figures at the top, Estimated labor cost and Labor % of revenue, then a row per tech. Owners, managers, and bookkeepers can open Accounting. This is on both plans, Basic and KeyBolt Pro.

KeyBolt does not run payroll. This is an estimate built from your own records so you can see whether a month made sense. Check the numbers before you pay anybody, and keep paying people through whatever you already use.

Set Each Tech's Pay Type First

The whole thing hangs on one setting most shops never touch. On the Team page, each person has a Pay type picker:

  • Hourly, priced from their clocked hours at their set rate.
  • Commission, priced from what they actually earned on jobs, not from hours.
  • Base + commission, both.

Leave it unset and KeyBolt cannot tell whether to count somebody's hours or their commission, so it warns you on their row rather than guessing and double-counting them.

How the Hours Are Priced

Regular hours at the tech's rate. Overtime at 1.5 times, double time at 2 times, holiday at 1.5. Those are the standard federal multipliers and they are not adjustable, which is part of why the figure is labeled an estimate. The hours themselves come straight from the Time Clock, including anything you split out with automatic overtime.

The QuickBooks Card

There is a QuickBooks payroll card on the same tab. It reads Not available yet for every shop today, and it will keep reading that until Intuit approves the payroll access it needs. Nothing is missing on your end. KeyBolt never sends your timecards to QuickBooks and never changes payroll there.

Tip: Labor as a share of revenue is the number to watch month to month. The dollar figure moves with how busy you were. The percentage tells you whether the busy was worth it.
