Sell One Product in Several Options

One Product, Several Choices

You sell one deadbolt in four finishes and two keyways. That's eight inventory items, and left alone your store shows them as eight separate products sitting next to each other. A product family groups them so the store shows one card and the buyer picks the finish and keyway they want.

Each option stays its own inventory item, with its own SKU, price, stock, photo and page. The family is only the grouping.

It's on both plans, and you set it up on the inventory item.

Making a Family

  1. Go to Inventory and open one of the items.
  2. Find the Product family card and open the Family list.
  3. Pick New family....
  4. Give the family a name buyers will read, like "Kwikset SmartKey Deadbolt".
  5. Under What changes between items?, name each thing that varies: Finish, Keyway. Up to six.
  6. Tap Create family.
  7. Fill in this item's values for those boxes, say Satin Nickel and KW1, and tap Save options.

Then open each sibling item, pick the family you just made from the list, fill in its values, and save. An item joins the family once it has a value in every box.

Get the option names right the first time. Once a family has items in it, the names are locked. You can rename the family, but you can't turn Finish and Keyway into something else. If you got them wrong, take the items back out of the family first.

What the Buyer Sees

  • Your store shows one card with the family name, an N options line, and a price range when the options are priced differently.
  • Tapping in lands them on one option's page with a row of buttons for each choice. Picking a different one takes them to that item's own page, with its own price, stock and photo.
  • An option that's out of stock still shows, marked (sold out), so a buyer can see the finish exists.
  • An option you haven't switched List for sale on doesn't show at all.

Google Handles It For You

If your Google Merchant feed is connected, KeyBolt tells Google the options belong together and what varies between them. Google then shows them as one product with choices instead of eight near-duplicate listings. There's nothing extra to fill in for that.

Leave this empty for a normal item. Most stock is one product in one version. A family is only worth the setup when the same thing genuinely comes in variations a buyer would choose between.
